Frank & Dora Jean Edwards Crowned As
2009 Oyster King and Pearl

The name Edwards is widely known in Amite. Frank and Dora Jean are well known and respected throughout the area. The couple present the picture of a wonderful family and beautiful marriage. Now they will also be known as the 2009 Amite Oyster Festival King and Pearl.

Both were born in 1935, they met in 1945 and have not been apart since. The couple have known each other for 63 years. They are both 1953 graduates of Amite High School. After graduation, Frank attended LSU Law School and Dora Jean attended nursing school at Our Lady of the Lake. In 1956 the couple were wed. After graduating college the couple moved from Baton Rouge back home to Amite. Frank began practing law and Dora Jean started nursing  at Lallie Kemp Medical Center, where she eventually retired from. "The two best decisions I've made have been becoming a nurse and marrying Frank," joked Dora Jean.

Frank was elected Sheriff of Tangipahoa Parish in 1968 and served for 12 years. After serving as Sheriff, Frank returned to practicing law in Amite. "We have never left the areas and don't intend to. We are honored and excited about being crowned. This will probably be the most activity we have had since he (Frank) was in office," the couple said.

The couple will preside over the events of the 2009 Amite Oyster Festival which will be Friday, March 20 through Sunday, March 22. The couple are the proud parents of eight children, Alice Stevens, Frank III, Clay, Andrew, Chris, Morgan, John Bel, and Daniel Edwards. They have 24 grandchildren and reside in Roseland.

Making up the rest of the Oyster Royalty is Jr. Miss Jenna Anzalone, Little Miss Chasity Hayden, Miss April Roberston, Teen Miss Kristina Temple, Deb Miss Hannah Anzalone and Petite Miss Lauren VanMullem.
